Research Interests
Research is directed towards understanding the postnatal development of the autonomic nervous system and the reflex control of cardiovascular and other target organs. We investigate the pathophysiology of disorders in which there is evidence of disrupted development. These include hypertension, non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, and sudden infant death syndrome. As a corollary, we are interested in the autonomic mechanisms that the normally developing, but immature, animal employs to deal with environmental disruptions, including maternal stress and bacterial infection. A common developmental theme in our studies is the transition in control mechanisms from ones adapted especially to the intrauterine environment to ones utilized postnatally. We conduct in vivo studies using cardio-vascular,ventilatory, neurophysiological and pharmacologic methods.
